T'is the Season!

As Christmas approaches, I find myself creating Christmas quilting ornaments, just as I have for the past 3 years, for the charming gift shop in Hot Springs, NC, the Hazelwood House Gift Shop.

 

This Arts, Crafts & Gifts shop and its charming owner, Elizabeth, have commissioned both quilts and wall hangings from me. Though hard to make, these little ornaments, made from quilt pieces, come out looking quite fun. 

 

The gift shop specializes in oil paintings, prints, photography, pottery, stained glass, jewelry, teddy bears, dolls, quilt hangers and racks, wall hangings, brooms, hand-painted wood items, picnic baskets, Tree Spirit Soap, rocking chairs, greeting cards, gift bags and paper, hand- knitted caps, Christmas stockings, wash cloths, candies, jewelry, antiques and yard art.  Hot Springs is a fascinating town. the Appalachian trail goes right through it, which means that for the entire summer the town is overrun by hikers and adventurers from all walks of life, bent on conquering both the challenge of a 4- month long hike, or the thrilling challenges of class 4 rapids on the nearby French Broad river. As well, the Hot Springs Spa nearby provides fun and invigorating rest to the weary tourist willing to pay $40 an hour for the pleasure. All of these, plus random monthly festivals of all stripes, make this unlikely town an obvious spot for touristing, gift shops, hotels, and the like.  My daughter was married here and has spent the past 3 years selling her own brand of art she produces with her husband. She introduced me to Elizabeth and the Hazelwood House. I feel fortunate to live near such a picturesque place - and to share my craft with them!
